Encouraging Words

"There are only three responses to questions from the press: (1) 'I know and will tell you'; (2) 'I know and I can't tell you'; and (3) 'I don't know.'"--Dan Rather

Beyond Roe and Toward Human Rights for Women

I think it is way past time to set a old new agenda for reproductive justice, rooted in human and civil rights. Clearly, the right to privacy is necessary but not sufficient. Read the full article here, or if you are having trouble downloading it, read it on Heartfeldt where you can see links and also tell me what you think about these ideas.

"Where the Hell Are All the Women?"

(Except for Sarah Palin, of course--we know where she is!) Read this article I wrote for the 9/08 Elle Magazine about why women do and don't run for political office. Women are 16% of Congress and Governorships, 10% of biggest city mayors, less than 1/4 of state legislators. Why? AZ Governor Janet Napolitano summed it up: "You can't win if you don't run."  Read it All Here.

"The Incredible Shrinking Woman"  Elle Magazine used my title "The Incredible Shrinking Woman" for a spread of essays that won a prestigious Front Page Award from the Newswomen's Club of New York.

Here's the lead-in to my Q&A with Elle.com: YOU DON'T CHOOSE—YOU LOSE
ELLE: What might the reproductive landscape look like in a decade?
Gloria Feldt: That depends on who's president, who's in control of Congress, who's on the Supreme Court, and who's in charge of state legislatures and sitting in the governor's seat. Because the Bush administration will have had eight years to fill the federal courts with antichoice judges, it's unlikely that the courts will protect what is left of
Roe. This makes the electoral process more important than ever. What happens from here depends on each of us as citizens and voters.

The New York Times
Op-Ed Contributor Margaret Sanger’s Obscenity By GLORIA FELDT

WHEN you tour the Lower East Side Tenement Museum’s restoration at 97 Orchard Street, you walk through the experience of the immigrants who arrived in waves at the turn of the 20th century, often to live five or six to a tiny room. According to the 1900 census, the 18 wives in the Orchard Street building had given birth to 111 children altogether, of whom 67 were then alive.

A 40 percent infant and child mortality rate sounds shocking now. Back then it was the norm. Maternal mortality was 99 percent higher than it is today; 40 percent of those deaths were caused by infection, of which half resulted from illegal or self-induced abortion. Birth control was to revolutionize women’s health. But it would take a social revolution to get there.
